Happy Chinese New Year – Gong Xi Fa Cai

Gong Xi Fa Cai!

Every year Fiipinos use to celebrate with our Chinese friends as they celebrate their New Year. As we all know Chinese has their own calendar so they don’t celebrate the New Year on January 1. Filipinos love celebrations and this season is very colorful. It is very festive and dragon dance is quite an entertainment.

We celebrate this occasion by buying food that is related to this event such as Tikoy. Tikoy is sticky, thus it symbolize family who will stick together throughout the year. Some Filipino believes in it and some don’t. Whatever their beliefs are they still buy this food. It is not also because of the taste but because it is the trend. Aside from that it is everywhere and when you are thinking of a merienda (snack) for the day, it is a perfect choice.

Fortune tellers, Feng Shui and charm accessories are also everywhere. Many entrepreneurs believes in the luck these things can bring to their businesses and they also follow what the fortune tellers told them about what will happen and how to avoid it. The house location and the furniture also re-arranged to bring luck following the Feng Shui belief. Many others buy accessories not only for the luck but for amusement and fashion statement. Though there is no harm in believing in these things, we should still remember that no one knows what will happen in the future and that what we do today dictates our future. At the end of the day, it is still hard work that pays off.

Happy Chinese New Year!
